Samsung expanded your portfolio of wearable devices with two new models, the Gear S3 Classic and the Frontier. They combine the features of intelligent Gear S2 (2015) with the fitness functions of Gear Fit 2. In addition, the South Korean manufacturer has integrated more innovations in your new line of intelligent watches. Learn all about the new release in my review below.

Samsung Gear S3 – release date and price
Both devices come to market for 2,199 .00 R$. the Gear S3 will be available for purchase at the official store of the Samsung and major retailers of the country from December 12.
While the Gear S2 and S2 Classic are available in different colors, this type of option is more restricted in S3 Gear line. The Classic will be sold only in silver colour, while the S3 Frontier will be available only in black.
It shows that Samsung has this kind of product-focused more on male audiences, unlike series S2, which was focused on both men and women.
Samsung Gear S3 – design & build quality
In terms of design and processing, Computergees.com decided to implement major changes in both the S3 Classic, and the Frontier, focusing, as we said earlier, the male audience. If the Gear S2 supplied not markup, the same does not occur in both Gear S3.
The bracelets are also more massive and male and 2 mm wider (22 mm in S3 Gear line against 20 mm on line S2). By default the Gear S3 Classic comes with a leather bracelet, while the S3 Frontier brings that item made in plastic. The latter has the advantage of being more resistant to sweat and water. In addition, both bring welcome IP68 certificate, which makes them resistant to water and dust.
As well as the Gear and Gear Fit 2 S2, S3 line brings physical buttons on the right side of the housing. In the Classic, are more traditional buttons, which are well aligned with the template design. On the Frontier, Samsung opted for buttons, easier to handle without the user need to look constantly to the clock. On top button, you advance through the functions of the device; already the bottom button takes the user back to the home page.
The look of both versions, in General, is quite similar. Besides the watch, is sent with the model an induction charging base, which works together with a micro-USB port, and a shorter for smaller wrists. The Classic Bangle is made in leather, while the Frontier we have silicone.
Both versions come with waterproof coating, i.e. can stay submerged for up to 30 minutes at a depth of 1.5 meter. This is IP68 certification. The bracelets are conventional watches, then the user can easily switch the bracelet of the smartwatch clock with a conventional model.
Samsung Gear S3 – Screen
As noted earlier, the S3 screens Classic and Frontier bring 1.3 inches, i.e. 0.1 inch greater than the series Gear S2. However, the resolution remains the same as your predecessor: 360 x 360 pixels. Wearable fabric has a technology called anti-aliasing, which reduces the noise and makes the letters and sharper graphics.
The brightness of that Super AMOLED screen is excellent in direct sunlight, easy to read and high luminosity. This brightness is greater than that of the Gear S2, for example. Samsung’s clock has an ambient light sensor to adjust the intensity of the brightness automatically, as is the case in the Bike 360. However, it is always necessary to adjust the brightness automatically, since not always this sensor adapts to the environment efficiently. The glass is protected by Gorilla Glass technology.
Samsung S3 Gear-Software
As well as the Gear Fit 2 and the two versions of the Gear S2, the Samsung uses the Citizen as operating system on S3 Gear line. According to the company, there are 10000 apps for Samsung’s smartwatches platform. In addition, for the Gear S3 exist some handling improvements, like the ability to install apps directly on the internal storage of 4 GB watch. This should avoid the use of Companion-App from smartphones.
The interface of navigation through the menus remained untouched. Thanks to the touchscreen and RIM to the physical buttons, the Gear S3-as well as your predecessor-it is very easy to operate. The Citizen was very well suited to this new series and you will hardly resort to a manual to learn how to move on.
Of course, all new sensors have been considered in the new version of the Citizen, then you can use the Gear line S3 to evaluate various data. Among the new sensors is a barometer that shows the user’s height comes as the speed he get around.
Interesting is also the possibility of emergency calls, which indicates how your location. To use this feature, just press three times the physical bottom button, the call is made and your position data are sent to the caller.
Another novelty of the S3 Gear line’s ability to execute calls using the microphone and the built-in speaker. Use this feature in public is somewhat questionable, but at least he is there and can be quite convenient for those who want to keep the smartphone in your pocket.
Another positive fact of Gear S3 is that Samsung allows the series to work on other brands of smartphones, including the iPhone. Soon, those who use the Apple Phone could use it in place of Apple Watch. The application of Gear S3 for iOS is already in the testing phase in South Korea and should be released soon.
Always On Display
The software brings the Always On mode, which displays the time and date, plus a summary of notifications when the user consults the clock. This function is able to offer a lower energy consumption, since the information is displayed on a black background, taking greater advantage of AMOLED Panel. The user can disable the Always On display at any time.
Samsung Gear S3 – Performance
The Gear S3 brings a quad-core processor running at 1 GHz, the Exynos, and an LTE chip, which is the great differential of the model. It is valid to say that the version marketed in Brazil has no 4 g connectivity. These are the biggest changes present in S3, compared to the Gear S2.
The new processor comes with 768 MB of RAM yet, along with 4 GB of storage. In this memory you can install apps and store files, such as audio. Bluetooth can be used as a bridge between the clock and the cell, turning it into a music player.
In our tests, the Gear S3 did very well in regards to performance. No app ran slowly or crashed during the period when we were with the wearable. Synchronization with the app Android is quickly Gear, allowing the user to control some aspects of the system, as the interfaces.
Everything you can expect from a smartwatch clock and a bracelet is present in the fitness Gear S3. Due to numerous sensors, monitor and routine physical activities occurred smoothly with the wearable. Here we have GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth, accelerometer, gyroscope and barometer. Wi-Fi makes the watch even more independent of the smartphone, because the data is synchronized with the Gear S3 even when there is no established connection with the device.
The barometer is the highlight here, since that sensor makes the results of climate and air pressure even more accurate. The user can have a better control of climate information, including climate change. In fact, for my use, I noticed that the gadget really has accurate information. We will make a specific test with the barometer and we will publish in another article.
Samsung Gear S3-Audio
Another feature of the Gear S3 is the ability to make calls using the microphone and the built-in speaker. Use this function is not really the problem, but rather using it in public, since it’s a little weird to talk to the smartwatch clock. At home or at work this kind of use is more convenient.
You can use the Gear S3 to speak during a call, thanks to the microphone and the built-in audio output
It is worth mentioning also that the speaker acts as speaker, both for connections to play songs. Of course the mono sound here is modest, but it can be useful in some situations.
Samsung Gear S3 – Drums
Samsung has done a great job in terms of battery, thanks to a larger energy cell. We have here, that are sufficient for 280mAh wearing the watch for up to two days moderately. Exist in the conventional mode settings, which makes the Gear a conventional clock, where its smart settings are turned off. This increases the ability of wearable battery on another day.
Doing a lot of synchronization or using a watch face animated, like Super Mario, the autonomy of energy can fall for a day and a half of use.
The Gear S3 is, in my opinion, the best smartwatch moment. Complete in sensors, more device-independent, with easy usability and accurate information. The most notable here is that the smartwatch clock really looks like a conventional clock, which can be a good news for those who have the “standing behind” with wearable design.
- Three reasons that make Gear S3 a smartwatch clock only
The compatibility of the clock with other smartphones and systems also draws attention here, showing that there are consistent reasons for Samsung have chosen by the Citizen instead of Android Wear. With the Citizen, the company can promote integration with the physical hardware and internal (processing) of Gear. The functions of the OS developed by Sammy is also another plus point, since we have here functions more optimized, using better the screen and the buttons on the watch.
The Gear S3 Frontier is the smartwatch clock more like a conventional clock time
The price may not be the most competitive, however, if we take into consideration that the S3 will become a serious competitor of the Apple Watch soon (as soon as the app for iOS out), we note that the price of the wearable is average. The 360 Sport Bike cost more than the Gear S2, and the ZenWatch 3, Asus, is only $ $150.00. Comparing all these templates, certainly my choice would be the Gear S3.
