With a population of just over 1,000 people, Akron is a small but vibrant community that offers locals and visitors alike plenty to explore.

The town was founded in 1882 by the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad and was originally named “New York”. When the post office opened in 1887, it was renamed “Akron” after Akron, Ohio. After the railroad left in 1932, Akron became an agricultural center for Washington County and today continues to be known as an agricultural hub with farming being one of its main industries.
