History of Abilene, Kansas
Abilene, Kansas was founded in 1857 by a group of settlers from Ohio. They named the town after Abilene, Texas, which had been established just two years prior. The settlers built a log cabin as the first structure in Abilene and soon more homes and businesses began to pop up. In 1859, the post office was established and by 1860 the population had grown to around 500 people. The town grew rapidly over the next few decades and by 1900 it had become an important commercial center for the region.
In 1865, Abilene became the county seat of Dickinson County and in 1872 it was incorporated as a city. During this time period, several churches were built including Methodist Episcopal Church South (1867), First Presbyterian Church (1871), and St. John’s Lutheran Church (1873). The first newspaper was also started at this time called The Abilene News which is still published today.
In 1881, Union Pacific Railroad Company opened a line through Abilene which helped to further spur economic growth in the area.
