How many times do you wake up your partner in bed because you had to turn on a light to see something? Have you ever wanted to have a bedside lamp which did not take too much space on the table? How about being able to turn off a lamp that was turned on by your partner without having to leave your bed?
In this article, I will explain how I created myself a the led light under the bed of the bedroom that can replace your existing lamp.
After completing my project of tinker yourself lighting the led under kitchen cabinets, I still had some spare parts for this project that were lying here and there. I realized that I had everything needed to implement something similar for the bedroom.
The reason I started this project was that I wanted to be able to turn on a light to low light at night so I can see where I’m going. In a similar idea, I won’t always in bed with my partner. Have a light that can illuminate the room when she goes to bed and which can be left on without preventing him from falling asleep is a very nice feature.
The circuit is almost identical to that of the led under kitchen cabinets. However, this design uses two switches instead of one. This change is necessary so that each partner has the control to turn on or turn off the lights from his bedside.
The installation of led light under your bed is really different from the usual configuration (a lamp on each side of the bed). This option provides the following benefits in a bedroom:
The light produced by LEDs is not too dazzling light, says Hetongdiy. The dimmer also lets you adjust the intensity to what is pleasing to the eyes at night.
This allows to see where you put your feet. It is also very interesting to be able to see the passage in the corridor between the room and the bathroom.
The lighting system can be activated without disturbing the sleep of the other partner.
Gives a beautiful ambient light for nocturnal activities…
In this article, I will explain how I created myself a light the led on the bottom of my bed in my bedroom.
Manipulation wall electricity can be dangerous. If you do not need to manipulate electricity basic skills, I highly recommend that you do not proceed with the installation of this project. Proceed at your own risk.
The materials needed for this project are:
A 5 m led light strip.
2 connector pins (only 1 color) to strip led SMD 3528 (5 times)
A power of 36 Watts (12 volts, 3 amps).
A power cord with a 3-pin socket.
A dimmer module for led.
2 wall switches 3-way (3 positions).
2 to 3 meters of wire (red and black).
A couple of RCA connectors (male and female)
A multimeter (to test connections)
A Phillips screwdriver
Tape measure flexible
As I explained previously, the equipment is almost identical to that used in article tinker yourself lighting the led under kitchen cabinets. I won’t go into details on how to connect everything together, or what is the best type of led. To know these details, please see the other article.
The only piece of equipment that is different is the type of switches. For this project, there are two switches or one for each partner. The type of switches is also different and requires 3-way switches. In short, there should be 3 terminals (screws) visible on each switch instead of 2. This type of switch to control the lights on both sides of the bed: a partner can turn on the lights and the other can turn them off or vice versa.
The RCA connector is needed in order to disconnect the band led the rest of the circuit. Bed head and the base of my bed are not tied together. The base is sometimes away from the head to clean the floor or change the sheets. Since the band is stuck under the bed base and the main circuit is fixed at the back of the head of the bed, I need a way to separate the two for maintenance purposes (without having to tear off the Strip!) I decided to use the RCA Connector for this purpose because they are mostly available in electronic stores. They can be recovered from many sources. If you do not have RCA connector, any other type of connector that disconnects when you pull on it can do the trick.
Total cost of the project
As the project of the kitchen, it can be completed on a budget. The total cost is less than $ 35.

* The cost of the usual items such as screws and glue is not included in the cost of the project.
The preparation time is simple, it requires testing all the circuit before attaching the tape to bed. Everything takes about half an hour to complete and confirm that all components work as expected. No welding is necessary for this step. The circuit is pretty basic. See the next section for details of the tour.
Stages of construction
The stages of construction are simple too. Here is a picture of the entire circuit:
The first thing on which you should focus is to test everything before attaching the module behind the headboard. The last thing you want is to start to connect all the wires and you realize that one of them is damaged or dimmers (who are stuck at the head of bed) are defective.

Choose where to put the components
This section defines the fundamental reasons that lead to the final design.
The led orientation
The location of the LEDs is obvious. However, I didn’t know if I had to stick the LEDs on the platform and guide them down or glued them on the base and towards the outside. If you choose the second option (to the outside), all the lower part of the room will be illuminated and the light will not be as high as if the LEDs are facing down.

Each of the two options don’t enlighten people when they sleep and does not disturb the sleep of your partner.
I had difficulty determining where I I would put switches and dimmer. They should be readily available and should not clutter up the head of the bed. I wanted to be able to find switches with only my hands, without having to look at advances where they are. You will just need to find them quickly in the middle of the night when that you’re not quite awake!
My first idea was to install the switch through the headboard by drilling small holes of the size of the switch and use switch plates to cover everything. This was not accepted as a viable solution because we thought it was too intrusive. It would also be difficult to find the light switch in the dark.
I opted to position the circuit of switches at the same level as the headboard. The mobile part of the switch is raised a little above the head. This option is perfect because it really facilitates the ignition of the lights, even when one is lying on the bed. You simply have to drag your hand on top of the head from left to right (or right to left).
The dimmer is not often used. Most of the time, you want the light intensity to be at its minimum brightness level. In some scenarios, you want to get more light and it is where the dimmer is useful.
For this reason, I decided to position the dimmer behind the headboard. It can not be reached when it is lying on the bed but it can be reached when you are sitting or standing in the front of the headboard.
Installation of the led Strip
The tape must be cut into three sections to be one for each side of the bed base. The Strip can be cut safely to all 3 LEDs. Each cutting point is identified by the points of contact in copper. Simply cut in the middle of the contact points and leave enough copper for connectors 2-pin.
Use a tape measure to calculate the length of each side of the base of the bed. If the length of the base does not match an exact cut-off point, feel free to calculate a shorter length as missing led 3 will not be a noticeable difference. In addition remember to leave some space between 2 perpendicular banks in order to have enough space for the connectors.
Now is the time to stick the LEDs at the base of the bed. The opposite side of the tape is adhesive and can be used to glue the Strip on a surface. Make sure that the mounting surface is clean and dry since you may not have many tests before the band lose its ability to adhere to the wall. If the band does not exactly match the length of the base, be sure to center the Strip to get the proper lighting.
I decided to use hot glue to fix the beginning of the band at the base of the bed. It’s a very good idea and helps to prevent incidents. The glue holds the band in place and avoids any damage. In case you forgot to unplug the circuit, if we move the base of bed away from the head, the band will be sufficiently bonded to withstand the blow and is the RCA connector that disconnects.
Connection between the strips
Use connectors to link them together each of the bands. The connectors are specifically designed to connect together led strips. You just have to open a door, drag the Strip in place and close the door which will hold the Strip in place. When binding, make sure that you align the positive (red) Terminal and the negative (black) terminal of the band with the appropriate color of the connector code.
I also used hot glue to keep the connector glued to the base to avoid hanging wires. I have 2 cats at home and it’s a good idea to make sure that all these threads do not resemble a cat toy 🙂

Do things differently?
This is my second project involving led light strips. I don’t think I’d do things differently. Everything is usually such that I wanted to. I could possibly add a motion sensor like shown here (in English) to automatically detect when I wake up at night so that the room lights automatically, but is perhaps too extreme. After all, just raise your hand and slide it on the headboard.
