Rien ne va plus – Baselworld 2013 closed its doors yesterday. If the stand builder these days the exhibitor booths break down, is for organizers and producers time to take stock.
A New Visitor Record
In this year’s edition of the world’s largest watch fair, a number of eye-catching premieres were made. The manufacturers impressed with impressive new models and advanced technical innovations. With the main hall designed by Herzog & de Meuron, the sector show has also received some kind of landmark.
As far as the naked figures are concerned, the event has shattered all the hitherto present: 1460 exhibitors from 40 nations captivated the visitors. With regard to the number of visitors, a record value could be achieved: 122,000 fan buyers and watch fans were present this year, according to Adam Riese a whopping 17% more than in the previous year. The fact that one or the other wrongly detected a drop in visitors was probably due to the fact that the human masses spread over a larger area due to the expansion of the site.
Between Branchenmekka And Dreiländereck
On the Baselworld you can also find watch aficionados. However, one gets the impression that there are mainly representatives and dealers with briefcases, which pay a visit to the event. Only on weekends, this business overhang shifts a little towards private trade fair visitors whose visit is solely due to the enthusiasm for high-quality timepieces according to chronologicalwatches.
In the selection of the world’s largest watchmaking fair, the apple falls not far from the trunk: Baselworld is located near the Vallée de Joux, the mecca of the watch industry, on the northern edge of the Swiss Juramountains. At the same time, the Basel site is close to the German and French borders. As short as the paths are, so numerous and international are the visitors.
New Standards In Gear Accuracy And Gear Reserve
Two watch models attracted a lot of attention from the public: the Girard-Perregaux Constant Escapement, which we already mentioned in our contribution to Basel! And the Hublot “LaFerrari”. The former provided an inhibition for attention, which supplies the gear train evenly with energy and thus compensates for a tension of the spring housing that decreases with increasing duration.
This further development of the classic anchor restraint sets new standards in the field of speed accuracy and allows watchmaking to break new ground. The Hublot “LaFerrari”, on the other hand, impresses with an incredible “longevity”. For fabulous 50 days, the 11 spring houses supply the clock with enough voltage to run the clock without further energy supply. With this fabulous world record the old reserve reserve record was exceeded by 20 days.
The price for the limited time of only 50 pieces has not yet been determined, but the prices of luxury watches up front know no boundaries, is commonly known. For the large watch fan with a narrow purse, the Baselworld is almost tantalusqualen, which must be endured at the glass display cases. So close and yet so far is the one or the other exhibition.Prices are not listed, but in many models the fingers on one hand would not be enough to count the digits before the comma.
The manufacturers will be able to taste their performance at the fair. Even in small stands the trade fair budgets are in the six-digit range. The brand presentation alone in the brand book, which has already been sold out after only a few days, is worth around EUR 15,000. For most brands, the performance is expected, but some well-known names have already turned their backs on Baselworld. For example, the Richemont brands Jaeger-LeCoultre, Cartier, A. Lange & Söhne and IWC are no longer part of the game. There was talk of arbitrary business conditions for partner companies and user charges for exhibitors. Too expensive the stand rental, too unfavorable the conditions, was the accusation addressed to the organizers of Richemont.
As one did not want to dance after the whistle of others, they finally went to Geneva to have their own event with the SIHH. Even though most of the prestige brands are still on board and the counter-event is lagging behind with regard to visitor numbers and sales figures, this is a severe loss for the world’s biggest watch fair. Without a doubt, the organizer was a good year in 2013. After the high-gloss facade had received slight scratches in the recent past, this year could once again be a highlight.
From the viewpoint of the exhibiting manufacturers, the success of the trade fair can not be directly seen in the number of visitors, but not only the organizers, but also the large names present, were also quite satisfied with the course of business. It is crucial for them to establish which contacts were made and how the new model innovations were accepted by fanfavers as well as by the general public. Whether the Baselworld 2013 was worthwhile for the more unknown manufacturers can be seen not least in their (non) participation next year, because not every caliber achieves this moment of inertia.
